The location of the speedometer is the least of the woes here. Who cares? I rarely look at the speedometer.

And center instruments persisted on a number of economy car models for decades, because it cut down on the cost of making separate RHD/LHD versions. It just isn’t something that’s really been done at Tesla’s price point before, at least not since around WWI or so, so I guess people today just find it jarring and…
Agreed. At first, just like everyone, I thought the Model 3 had a crazy design. But it turned out to just that “it’s new and I don’t like change” feeling that I quickly got over. I drove the Model 3 for a week, then a Model S for 2 weeks, and it felt so very outdated in comparison. I was very happy to get back into a…
I don’t mind the general design of the Model 3. It’s not offensive to me like others say it is for them.
Older models have been receiving every update that can run on their hardware. Old processors, for example, have not received the new browser, but they receive other functional and entertainment updates. I haven’t looked it up, but how many car makers offer free lifetime map upgrades alone?
I’ve never driven a Model A, but location of speed info displayed on a Model 3 allows me to see what’s happening on the road in front of me more effectively than looking down at traditional gauges on our other cars.
Just so you know, cars originally started out with the gauge cluster in the middle. Look at a Ford Model a for example.
Having ridden in both, the center-only display on the 3 is fucking stupid and distracting.
unsafe lane change maneuvers that a human would likely avoid—the car would pass on the right
Then those owners can rightfully decline to pay for autopilot. Problem solved.
Of course. It’s the hyper sensational world we live in. It’s all down to the bias used to present findings. Title your article “Teslas Navigate is Worse that human driving” puts people on the defensive. Change the title to “Teslas Navigate baby steps in right direction but not there yet” and you’ll have a much more…
I don’t typically comment but this is a truly asinine statement. I mean seriously PayPal, spacex, and TESLA? Really can’t deliver? You are seriously focusing on every negative aspect you can when you say things like that. Regardless of the actual level of accomplishment, all of this companies went from nothing to…
You’re confusing perfect with good.
In engineering they say don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough. The current car navigation systems are so poor and error prone that there can absolutely be self-driving systems and convergent infrastructure to provide huge benefits over humans in 90% of situations.
I’m a…
Seems to me Consumer Reports wildly overestimates the average human driver.
I still maintain that full self-driving will never be safe unless all of the vehicles on the road are being self-driven, and ideally connected to a shared wireless network with the status of vehicles and infrastructure all around them. Even then, I still have issues with the autonomous “moral” decisions that would…
It’s kind of great because you know over time the product improves which is way more than I could say about my prior cars. I agree with most of what the article says about the current state of the system. However, the autopilot is already markedly better than it was a few months ago. I am sure by the time CR printed…
It’s awesome. Though to be clear I paid tens of thousands for a great car and get to beta test software as a bonus.
It would REALLY help if CR would be a little more forthcoming with their test data. What version of Software was used during their testing? What Level was selected under “Speed Based Lane Change” setting, which is user level preference? As of 2019.8.5 and now 2019.16.1.2 my car will NOT stay in the passing lane longer…
Not sure what I expected from a state that doesn’t require indicator use when changing lanes or inspect cars after they’ve been bought.
It doesn’t appear to react to brake lights or turn signals, it can’t anticipate what other drivers will do
