There are merits to religions, they provided a moral framework before a legal framework was created, but this has outlived its merits, its cons far out weigh.

It's not out of a belief that humanity is "vital", it's out of a belief that the being which created humanity wants it to stick around in one form or another (depending on the religion you are looking at). <= you just said the same thing I did, the more or less belief that we are so important he wants us around.
