Ugh. This sound like a throwback to the hoards of cutesy, over-directed movies featuring exaggerated 'Straylan stereotypes that infested Australian cinemas after Strictly Ballroom in the 90s.
I had lost track of Lindsey Ellis and I'm relieved to know she still making videos.
This is one time I'm genuinely thankful to GJI
I used to not like those exact bands too, and TBH part of that was was because rock critics kept lauding them instead of music I liked. But I bought the albums cheap and gave them a few deep listens and discovered things I like about them. I'd never call Sonic Youth or Pixies my favourite bands, but I listen to some…
F**& yeah, Tres Hombres!
I don't buy this though. Not in the age of iPods and streaming. Who has to listen to a song they don't like these days?
Yeah, well I could agree that they suck now (Haven't heard their latest, but I'm With You was totally forgettable), but the songs you mentioned are perfect, and there were lots like them.
No, I liked that section - especially the part about Kraftwerk, which is a very valid point. It was the guest reviewer that pissed me off.
Yeah, now see that's a legitimate criticism that's expressed in a well thought-out manner.
I guess I never had that problem because the first album of their's I got into was One Hot Minute, and that's much more moody and impressionistic than their more popular albums. But even on BloodSugarSexMagik and Californication,…
Oh, so now we're picking on Toto too?! Fuck that, 'Rosanna' is awesome.
It doesn't seem like they're faking it to me; it seems more like when someone just refuses to engage with a black & white film or a film with subtitles. That may be their personal subjective taste, but it's still superficial.
I'd say it took a lot quicker for Coldplay and Kings Of Leon to turn into parodies of themselves, alas.
What have you found so far?
I like 'em both, though I prefer Gabriel-era because I came to them through his solo stuff. But I like Collins' solo albums too.
I just hate that kind of "Oh, let's take Boomer/Gen X culture down a few pegs!" schtick. I mean, we get it, everything we thought we loved is actually lame. It's old news now.
I dunno. Because they write actual songs with hooks and choruses? Because they can play their instruments well? Because they have a sense of humour but they can also be sincere? Because they have a sound that's uniquely 'theirs'? Because 'Under The Bridge' is overplayed?
That is a great great album though. I relish the thought of a pre-teen Harry Potter fan pressuring their mom to stream 'Why'd Ya Do it?' in the car.
Hm. I was interested in visiting the website myself until you mentioned the Chili Peppers thing. Talk about hipster bullshit. Hating on the Chili Peppers seems to be the 'in' thing at the moment.
You know what I find most of these sorts of discussions boil down to? A bunch of people insisting on their right to be an asshole to anybody online because, like, that's just how the Internet is and they should just deal with it.
Can we retire this idea that Oasis slavishly imitaed The Beatles? Aside from a few specific touches, like piano opening of 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and the mellorton on 'Go Let It Out', they sounded more like Faces or Sex Pistols. Or indeed, themselves. When I hear an Oasis song, I don't think they sound like…
