Almost no taxi drivers in NYC own their own medallion. Medallion owners are often bankers and other people who bought them as investments and rent them out to people. I don’t feel bad that people who lobbied for a government enforced cartel end up taking a hit when that cartel fails. 

It is kind of a good deal if you really like helicoptering and carting. You could get this, or a 700 sqf home in SF that you have to demolish and rebuild because you just bought it for the land.

Can anyone explain why they don’t just auction these vehicles? It seems bizarre to destroy them.
