What’s your point? I am not arguing that discrimination doesn’t exist. I am stating that the commenter’s statement to the op is stupid because you don’t figure out a person’s skillset from looking at them.

“But they live in a racist, sexist culture, and therefore like EVERYONE else in that culture, they have implicit bias.”

How did you get the internship? Did you just walk in the door? Or what? Your story doesn’t make sense. My point is how they found out about you. Did you have to interview? How did they know you were a journalism major?

So they just saw you, thought, hmm here is white guy, must know how to code? Or did you go through an interview process that explained your qualifications? Maybe a case study? Or was it a function of you have previously worked with the hiring folk somewhere else?

Actually, I based it on the history of failure on the continent vis a vis authoritarianism. It hasn’t happened in Great Britain. It hasn’t happened in the US. It hasn’t happened in Australia. It is starting to happen in Canada, but mostly coming out of the Quebecois.

Why would anyone ally with a hateful bigot like yourself?

How is knowing the difference between the Scottish Enlightenment and the French Enlightenment ethnocentric? I’d love to hear this one. Or alternatively, just explain how I am wrong regarding negative freedoms (anglophone philosophy) and positive freedoms (continental philosophy)?

How do you think hiring works? People look at resumes.

Jason, I hate to be downer, but this in unfair. I saw one of those Harry Potter documentaries and the double decker busses run on magic, not skill in Britain.

What’s the difference between trying and not trying in baseball? Is it just the pitcher stops caring? This is based on my softball experience where whether or not I try, I play the same.

So is the unwritten rule that when you stop trying, the other team should stop trying?

Your social security number. The same way any other citizen would prove their citizenship.

This. Radical leftists are just as likely or more so to “say eat the rich” or “bring back the guillotine” in modern parlance. While we don’t take them seriously, these are theoretically direct calls to violence. They are advocating for the laws that will make them unable to organize.

It comes from the French influence on the Enlightenment. The belief in positive freedom will eventually or immediately devolves into Tyranny. See the French History post Monarchy as an example. They have had at least 5 republics, 2 empires, and an occupation government in vs one single breakdown in the US. Clearly

They don’t, but they do have a pretty standard concept of freedom on the continent that is substantially worse than the Anglophone countries, given it’s propensity to disappear into authoritarianism.

As someone who grew up in Pittsburgh, the only two legitimate complaints are the people and the shitty public transportation.

Pittsburgh has been back for maybe 20 years. I’m almost 30 and grew up in the area. There were only two steel mills still in production then.

The seriousness of the punishment is irrelevant when talking about speech.

“West Buttress”

Those may be fighting words. Or at least incitement. Be Careful!
