It will be interesting to see what (if anything) Nintendo does about this, not that they would have any real ground to stand on. We all know their issues with copyright violation, but this is great use of imagination brought to life.
I think I am still going to hold out hope. I am one of those that still carries their 3DS around every day and have built my library of both physical and downloaded games up to where I only need my 3DS system. We also have a WiiU but I find I can easily pick up and play handheld games because it takes little effort…

Iv’e actually read that the input is the same as the ones at the end of the Wii/U remotes. So in theory you might be able to use those so they feel more comfortable.
