Slightly clearer map:

Ok, smart guy.

Don’t you mean the late Senator Fred Thompson?

You should leave.

Do you mean Fred Thompson?

Nearly 100 years. My grandma's brother flew(and died) in one of them over Vietnam over 40 years ago. He was based out of the same airbase on Guam that these aircraft were.

Your precious car site is still there, and fast on its way to being a sub of FA. Have you never noticed Gawker cross posts before now?

Sorry but you seem to be in the minority. Ever notice how the “most popular on other blogs” sidebar usually has an FA article representing Jalopnik? Tyler has some of the highest readership of any kinja articles. And his writing is incredibly informative and usually unbiased to a fault.

Since very, very few articles about these islands cares to include a damn map, here’s one that shows China’s claimed area, and location of the islands. Not exactly a fair claim, or sane, or anything but a ridiculous idea in the first place, it’s an invasion of many nations’ existing and very much valid waters, so they

Should have flown a pair of B1’s over them, bigger payload, faster, looks cooler etc

The islands themselves have been built over the last couple of years, to much protest and speculation on their intended use by the rest of the world, but

Indeed! The U.S. Navy should be making it a point of sails-by on a monthly basis.

The US not wanted in the South China Sea? Well, that depends on who you ask. Sure, China dose not want the US there but Japan and a host of other nations, including Vietnam of all countries dose indeed want the US there.

And something tells me they’re pretty shitty for the environment. What kind of marine life existed on the reefs that China buried as the base for their islands?

Besides diplomacy, there isn’t much we can do besides keeping a military presence in the area to remind them that we’re watching them.

Very true. That’s worldwide. Everyone sits on their hands and bad shit happens. If the US attempts to influence matters for the better, we’re told to mind our own business (those people love to forget that 90% we’re acting at the behest of a foreign friend asking for help) and things may or may not blow up in our face.
