Awesome man. Three of the 5 speeds, huh? Id be curious to know what failed each times. They are notorious for having synchros go bad, or having their shift forks get bent after long term use leading to more difficult shifts, but three complete failures? Thats some bad luck!
Its a Chevrolet, it doesn't have vacuum operated hubs. It doesn't even have hubs that unlock from the axle shafts. All of that is done by an electronic actuator at the differential. Same reason why GMT400 and newer Chevrolets never came with limited slip differentials in the front.
Like the Explorer which was on the exact same (BroncoII/Ranger) chassis. There was a reason the Aerostar lasted until 1997 though.

The build and material quality on these things is rather poor, so they are prone to falling apart. There's definitely a difference between maintaining your shit and negligence though. Negligence makes me sad too.
