I work in video/film for a living and from the (admittedly) few apps I've seen for editing on Linux, I have to say I'm unimpressed. It just seems too limited. Maybe I haven't seen the right apps (Kino looks more like iMovie than Avid/FCP).

I came in here to say what Mike Panic said.
I have something similar setup for my laptop, though through different means.
Using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on a Mac... had an interesting bug. I opened up the settings (Tools: LiveClick Options...) and the resulting window had no "OK" or "Done" button. I had to force-quit Firefox just to get it closed. Anyone else have this problem, or am I special?
What gre9del said. If you want to use a professional tool, you pay a professional price. There are plenty of cheap or free alternatives.
I'll still never forget the time I got to edit on a Final Cut system with a pair of 30" Cinemas and a 32" HD broadcast monitor. If only I had taken pictures.

This one always gets me:
Not to nitpick, but isn't this the same video that was part of the Removing Car Dents on a Budget post from yesterday?
Yay... something to feel kinda good about. Our family puts out just over half of the "average two person household." I can't imagine this is all that accurate, though still good to get a general idea of your individual impact.
This is a pretty good overall list/how-to. I'd just make a couple amendments/changes...
I've been using iEatBrainz for a while now. It works pretty well unless you toss it some really obscure stuff. It did try to tell me that an Aphex Twin track was an Enya song (though I didn't think Aphex Twin was that obscure).
