I’m with you on this. I think he believes he was joking. He treats the entire presidency like a joke. Kim is now an “honorable”, “worthy” leader (2 adjectives pulled from a Charlie Chan movie) who runs a Stalinist dictatorship, starves millions of people, and kills his relatives when they get in the way.

Is the father a doctor? I couldn’t tell that he had any sort of existence at all. But they’re both terrible parents, and that fits in with the realism of their (non-supernatural) family.
mother! is far more of a WTF film. And about 5% as effective.
With the advantage of having seen it, the sense of dread throughout Hereditary is consistent and almost palpable. YMMV.
OTOH, all the men are completely powerless and ineffectual. Everyone in the cast is fundamentally flawed (except for a few high school students).
I think the key to this is that, unfortunately, Annie and Steve are terrible parents. For instance, any reasonable person who finds themselves soaking their children in lighter fluid for any reason whatsoever should get help. The kids were failed repeatedly throughout the movie because the parents were too wrapped up…
