The swing from "eh this will be boring" to "fascinating" was pretty quick when the composer was on last episode. Damn if that doesn't sound cool.

MUST. DESTROY. NEOCONSERVATISM.

Weirdly, it's almost felt like they wrote it as a just-in-case final season, the way they've been streamlining and with the events of the past few episodes. But with the way Landgraf and the other execs enthuse about the show, the J's must've been pretty confident in its renewal chances for at least one more season.

It has some of the most brutal, tense action on TV, but at its heart is an excellent family drama that happens to be about spies. A tough sell for either expectation.

Honestly this is the hardest show for me to recommend to other people. The Wire and Breaking Bad had pretty obvious hooks, and a good dose of humor. The Americans is an incredibly low-key show, slow moving to the point where most plot threads stretch over multiple seasons. (Even Mad Men, while similarly low-key,

When the CEO was the guest on the podcast, I thought that spoke pretty well to its renewal chances, and I was happy that he essentially confirmed a 5th season. Still, to preemptively give it a 6th season at this point is pretty amazing for such a low-rated show, and really speaks to how good FX's priorities are.
