It’s so weird compared to my corporate application development environment. I used to manage a team that built internal applications for one of the largest healthcare companies. In many cases my QA people got paid more than the programmers.

Can you expand on this? So if I work a for a large company my team is mandated to go out drinking after work? That sounds dreadful. Is it a horrible career move to skip? What if I want to go to the gym or something?

Large companies are even easier. I've hired for a company that has 20,000 plus employees. There's always wiggle room. Not insane wiggle room, but you can add a little more on if they ask.

I've definitely had a "quota" interview, where they know who they want but HR makes them interview X number of people. I got there, the manager knew literally nothing about me, not even my name.
