Mitt was a Mormon and believed in magic underwear but he was right about the 47% of the US population that does not pay Federal income tax.

Politifact rated the statement as “True” when Romney said it. Why? Because it is.

Your argument that everyone owes something to the society they live in is one I have no problem accepting. Where I lose your argument is when you claim that the 47% of people that do not pay Federal income tax get a pass.  Why don’t they owe something to their country as well?

By the same measure, the 47% of people that pay nothing in Federal income tax surely also owe their country something, right? Do you think they deserve a complete pass in paying taxes?

No, my argument is that you can increase the marginal tax rate to 100% if you want. Go for it. If you think that people will actually pay that you’re insane. We just went through this with the corporate tax rate. Rather than pay rates they thought were insane, US companies moved trillions of dollars offshore.

You’re not giving the rich anything.  You’re simply permitting them to keep more of what they have rather than give it to you.

What is conveniently left out of that particular spin is that when the marginal tax rates were even higher than 70%, there were tons of laws that allowed all kinds of tax shelters that were outlawed in the 1986 tax reform law.

The 70% increase would generate, at best, $72B a year.

I dunno.  This story is kind of weird.  If the cops were looking to do surveillance, why would they cause protesters phones to malfunction?  That would defeat the purpose.  You can’t get any good information from cell phone communication if you make the phones inoperable in the first place.

I don’t think so.  Trump set that pattern of just blowing off any allegation of racism while still spouting “racially-tinged” comments left and right.  Same thing with events like Charlottesville, Steve King, etc.  People are coming right out in the open with overtly racist acts/comments.

He’s already got a primary opponent.  And I don’t think losing the Ag committee spot will make much of a difference.  It wouldn’t surprise me if he gets it back.  Huelskamp got his back after they stripped him of it.

There’s a long way to go yet but I don’t think Feenstra’s crazy enough for your average West Iowan.

I don’t think King losing this November is a given. To the contrary, I’d be willing to bet this whole deal actually helps him with his constituents.
