Yeah ima wait until that Spur comes down another 30k before I pull out my checkbook. A 15 year old Bentley makes a good dd, right?

My knowledge of private jets is exclusive to that scene in Iron Man with the pole and the hot sake.

You’re exactly right. I used to work at a dealership for 2 years, until I found a more honest living. You have to understand that these poor salesmen are under some pretty heavy pressure by both their managers and their pay plan. Like, I would say at least a third if not half of our deals lost money, and those were

This is why, and stay with me here, we should just buy cars off the internet like any other retail product.  Dealerships don’t do a whole lot for car buying.

True, but aren’t most salesmen paid on commission? The dealer doesn't care how inefficient the process is time wise,  as long as they can maximize revenue

I’m glad I didn’t have a trade-in for them to evaluate, because I’m sure they would have “lost the keys” to that too.

I’ve done this the last three cars I’ve bought. Walk in with a spreadsheet with all the costs laid out, MSRP, rebates, discounts in line item format. With a final lease price and total OOP- the usual.

That’s certainly been the case with my most recent vehicle purchase. I knew what I was looking for, which models had which options, what the general pricing was, etc. But instead I was just met with a lot of lies and a lot of wasting my time. Throw a pregnant wife into that mix, and we ended up just buying off Carvana.

No kidding, if that manager worked for me I’d fire him straight away.

I’d go this route any day. And I’d buy from a dealership that left me alone to make my own decision, unless I asked for their help.

It seems many dealers want to consume as much of your time as possible so you give-in and reluctantly pay what they’re asking. Rather than walking away, having to do it all over again at the next place.

The cringiest phrase I hear when a dealer has a car priced with a mark up or is otherwise uncompetitive but refuses to budge: “We’re waiting for the right buyer”

Yeah, if a dealer tries to trot out a 4-square, you should just leave immediately. It’s a surefire sign that it’s not a place worth doing business with.

OOOH the lost keys game is my favorite, I just turn the wife loose. But I always ask them to check again before doing so.

Wait, you mean that the salesperson let you walk out, but then didn’t chase you down with a final offer that was good only for that day?!!?1?1!??

It’s not “almost like”. Those dealers depend on making as many customers suckers as possible.

It’s almost like they don’t want to sell to informed consumers who do their prep, rather take advantage of the sucker who walks in the door with absolutely no clue.

“I also said that his store was the most convenient and that if he sent a competitive quote there was a pretty good chance that he would get the deal. I also said that if he didn’t give me numbers there would be a 100 percent chance he would lose the deal. He opted to let the other store get the business.”

This is pretty much spot on. With the internet available, I’m shocked that some dealers still get away with these games. When shopping for one car recently, I got no response online within a day and went to the dealer for a test drive. They of course “couldn’t find the keys” to the model I wanted to drive, but had the
