The real purpose is that Smith's contract is only $2.5m guaranteed out of $15m (a contract type that is now banned in the NBA). And if the Lakers are trying to create a second max contract spot, this is one of the only ways to so so.

Food for thought: the Lakers don’t have space for a max salary. They also wouldnt mind sinking some of their $23M in cap space on a multi year deal on a solid rotation part, even if that contract is terrible by year 3. Al Horford would work well with James and A.D.
