OK, fair enough, but this tech to do any way of a believable job, you need 1000-2000 pics or the subject you want to insert. So I get that it is possible with a non celeb, but then these random people would have to be pretty big on the social media side of things to even reap that many pics.

Sure they were, but before Napster it was exclusively IT guys or people who knew them, as joe blow PC user had no clue how to use Usenet or FTP. Napster made it easy, and it started to spread, but the vast majority of people had no clue you could get free music on the internet til it aired on the nightly news.
