SCORCHING TAKE!

I think the comments on these features are hilarious because it's awesome to see so many Laker fans/Kobe stans who are so, so passionate about their irrelevance, and just want everyone to ignore their miserable little team.

I seriously don't get it. Help?

once again I've clicked on a post from the normally-solid deadspin and am left desperately searching for what would possibly be interesting about this post. I can't for the life of me figure out why this is funny or interesting or controversial. Please, for the love of God, enlighten me.

Excuse my ignorance (I'm not able to watch the game), but what is stupid about this?

Much misinformation in your statement. Here's some clarification for you.

As chris1961 suggested, it's mostly because of the volume required to produce the collimated image. I believe some systems use a more compact system where the image combiner (the semi-transparent window) has a holographic image that replaces some of the bulkier optics previously used. However they used to be more like

I think u forgot about F-104 widow maker which killed quite a similar number of German and Australian pilots.

The size of those early HUDs were limited by the space needed for the display, which sits underneath the combining glass.

For over a decade the Rafale has proven itself in several combat operations and exercises. The French are a stable supplier, with minimal political strings or supply issues.

From a design perspective, what will happen when we eliminate the pilot from the fighter? I predict a renaissance of sorts in fighter design when your limiting factor of what maneuver a fighter can perform is no longer dependent on the limits of the human body. All current 4th Gen US fighters have had stress cracking

Yes!

Serious question(s). Will these manned fighter jets be obsolete soon due to the advancement of drones that can take more g-forces and are not limited by human in cockpit endurance? Why do we need manned aircraft? Are drones able to "dogfight" or will they need to to be able to?

The Rafale is well proven and is held in high regard in the air combat community.

The purpose is to concentrate essential information in the pilot's primary viewing space. If the information is spread out in a wide arc, the pilot has to look around for pieces of information and could still loose situational awareness with what is in front of them. It is only an issue if the pilot has a need to look

The Viper's HUD has a pretty wide FOV, the WAR HUD on the block 40 is a bit larger and more suited for projection of FLIR imagery. The F-15E has the big daddy for US Fighters. Still, the HUD is really becoming a redundant feature as Helmet Mounted Sights offer higher SA.

Uhhh, you can't just say that they deserve it. And they don't operate "mediocre Russian planes". Most of their inventory is Su30 MKIs, the second best version of the Su27 (after the Su30MKK).

It's borderline irrelevant nowadays. Most modern aircraft have critical information projected onto the helmet visor, so that info is in front of a pilot, regardless where he looks.

The thing I never understood about cockpit design is the heads up display, why make it so small? That display could be a big arching piece of glass that fills the whole space between the "dash" to the canopy. Do they keep it small due to tunnel vision?

I think that is debatable!
