Unless the story was edited, I don't see where they said they're a new thing. In fact, they reference mimics wikipage (as a D&D monster) and mention liking them more in other games where they are less "realistic" looking which clearly means the author is aware that they're not new.

Though I only follow Major Nelson and not someone from the PS side of things, I kept seeing a lot of "back in stock" links implying that they would sell out, but keep getting more.
