The PR campaign claimed (and people believe that claim for some reason) it was delayed because of too much competition from other big films opening at the end of 2019... even though the end of the year is exactly the  timeframe when lots of big films always open.

I really liked the subplot with the refugees and was hoping that would remain in the story going forward.

Sure. Even without Covid there was a good chance this would be cancelled. The audience for it was small.
