Oh, Kicking and Screaming ‘96.
I know drug use is roughly equal among black and white people, but I’m not sure about dealing. I wouldn’t be shocked if more black people deal per capita, if only because job opportunities are more limited, and once they’ve been caught (at a higher rate than white dealers due to policing), they’re likely to have even…
I’ve read quite a bit about this, and what I understand is that the computer program reflects the way our justice system works.
Only marginally related, but I just traveled yesterday, and I had this epiphany that they should fill the flight by position relative to the aisle rather than area of the plane or whatever. Like instead of “Zone 1,” it should be “All window seats”, then “middle seats,” then “aisle seats.” That way, you don’t have the…
I think he’s better on camera. He was in the Little Women mini-series recently that Uma Thurman’s kid was in. He was OK. Not Christian Bale Laurie hot, but OK.
Japan and SK at least have “cram” schools at night; often those kids are doing school work far into the evening, though younger kids may go to activity-based hagwon/cram schools.
What would be ideal is unstructured time, but with adult supervision, and a short homework help period. “After school activities” is certainly better than nothing, but I think most kids are already over-subscribed and just need down time.
OMG, I take it all back, don’t cook! LOL
As a former terrible cook who is now passable, I would say that 9/10ths of being a decent home cook is learning how to choose a recipe. I spent a few years learning a new recipe only like once every 3-4 months, and then trying it over and over. And then choosing recipes similar to ones you already know, in order to…
I think some of my frustration is that I feel like the arguments against it largely come down to “it’s boring.” Like, these same teachers teach times tables, which is similarly nuts-and-bolts.. So it’s not like they’re against the idea that some things you just have to learn.
Man, that reading podcast made me so angry/sad. I grew up in Montessori in the 70s and phonics was central to the language curriculum.
I’ve had great luck in that part of the world in November through March. Just cold enough to drive away other tourists, but not so cold as to be unpleasant. I visited Pompeii (along with the Arabian peninsula) in November, Southern Spain in March, Istanbul in January, each time, so relatively empty, and the locals…
I’m not waiting on the dancing, drinking and screwing though.
I’ve also had good luck focusing on process rather than result. It’s something I picked up from DuoLingo, where you get points for numbers of days in a row that you practice. We also try to find ways to keep accounts of where my kids are on a project at any given time, so that they can look back on past performance to…
A mighty girl has a nice list, although it’s not organized by age (and it’s a bit of a mixed bag... Beauty and the Beast doesn’t make my personal list).
I also think it’s really important to carefully monitor media consumption, books, art, but especially video. Media helps us all imagine what it might be like to be someone else, so it’s disturbing to me that so much children’s media is so regressive in terms of gender and race.
Clicked assuming this would be about hte best rice balls: onigiri.
