Right, Clockers is why he was hired by Simon. I liked Clockers as Spike Lee's heightened reality, but it hasn't held up very well as social commentary.
Boyz N the Hood is one of those movies that were hailed as raw and gritty and real when they came out (see also: Clockers) that have been made to look a little silly by The Wire. It's so schmaltzy; the music alone is enough to make you gag.

Just looking at the shape of that woman's foot is making my skin crawl.
Lonesome Dove already seems extremely long-winded even after only a few pages, especially coming straight after Blood Meridian. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but it'll probably take me a bit to settle into its style. McMurtry doesn't seem too concerned with economy of character description.
