Persistence is the only winning strategy for BoI. Some people take 10 hours to get good, some people take 100 hours. Some people have played almost 300 hours and have Platinum God in the original and still suck (*cough*). Just stick with it, it'll make sense to you eventually, and it's a great feeling when it does.
