Not only is it a cartoon, its the most cartoony anime to come out of Japan in years. It sometimes feels like watching Looney Tunes at times. So, yeah, complaining about the violence in this is like complaining about the violence Bugs Bunny does to Elmer Fudd. The show does not take itself seriously. At all.

As others have said, check out Kill la Kill. It is absolutely NOTHING like any other anime this season. Its hard to describe. Yeah, it was "when" and not "if" when it came to that character. At least (said character) went out like a badass, though that scene was pretty gruesome, even by AoT standards.

It was pretty damn awesome. I was giddy as a schoolgirl throughout the entire episode. Imaishi understands that just because its anime doesn't mean it can't be animation. There was just so many crazy angles, squishing and squashing and one-frame easter eggs. Highly recommended.

Hiroyuki Imaishi aint with Gainax anymore and he almost had nothing to do with the new Eva films (though you can see they were trying to copy his style in the fight scenes). Trigger is his baby. Kill la Kill is best new Gainax show that isn't by Gainax.
