The videos you watch there are still ad supported. You're one revenue stream, but the by far larger stream is still people watching for free with ads, and YouTube would not exist if it were exclusively a paid service.

No, Nielsen's ratings system is actually quite good. It's imperfect. You hear people complain about it constantly, but what they're actually complaining about is that not enough people watch the shows they enjoy to make them profitable. That's not Nielsen's fault.
