Actually, I don't think people would be more forgiving rather than they simply would not have bought the game in the first place. Without the Final Fantasy name it is just another JRPG with bland characters, an incoherent plot, painfully linear gameplay, and a battle system that essentially plays itself.

Actually the first Mass Effect was pretty good with its science and the codex was essentially there to explain the work they put into it. The idea of Mass Effect engines is a pretty good idea for overcoming the troubles of FTL travel.
