Yea, I think that's a better response. Saying you don't know and following up by saying you'll try to find out the answer gives more and get back to them is better than saying you don't know and leave it at that.

This happens all the time when working in IT as end user support. Most of the time I tell the user "I don't know that off the top of my head, but I will look into it and get back to you."
