I actually 100% agree with you. I'd like to think, if I was at all involved in this (as a lawyer or jury member), I'd be able to follow the letter of the law and not insert my emotional reactions.

I do welcome criticism (it's how we keep things in check). I was only saying my emotional reaction was supportive. If I was actually in charge of legislation, I would not want to apply my emotion to that.
