No need to be scared, they can never be used. We have globalization to thank for this. The world is too tied together economically for the weapons to be used. More damage can be done through economics than any nuke used.
If a war happened, the first thing you’d do is try to destroy your opponents nuclear weapons.
Almost all modern warheads are “variable yield”, meaning they can be dialed up or down as deemed necessary. As for the number, it’s US policy to have redundancy in case some of the stockpiles are rendered useless in an attack. You also have to cycle warheads in and out of deployment for inspections.
