In the original story, letting all that stuff out of the box is what introduced the various evils into the world. They had to then release hope as well. If hope was in the box the whole time, then how was there *ever* hope in the world?

That's exactly how I remembered the story. If being in the box allowed hope to exist in the world then why did all the ills in there have to be *released*.

Actually I think they work all right. They never hold up to direct scrutiny, but they are enough to keep you from focusing on it out of the corner of your eye when you aren't expecting it.
