Exactly, I gave up reading it about halfway through and just kept thinking "ok, if the author at some point signals that this devotion to 80s pop culture is actually pathetic, I will give it some credit back" but from all I've read, that never happens.
To me it is basically the story of a cult; the protagonist accepts
