I can't tell for sure — have you played these games or is this just a reaction to what you see said about them?
I ask because I think:
1. The difficulty is overstated
2. I think the difficulty/accomplishment of overcoming it as the main appeal has a vocal minority propping up that perspective

The thing about Dark Souls was, even if there wasn't a shortcut, a lot of times you realize at some point you can just sprint past everything untouched to the boss in a minute or so. Then you get the feeling of running for a touchdown on top of the other pleasures of the game!

I messed up Siegmeyer every single time as well (3x I believe)…and every time I already knew what I needed to do. Once I accidentally killed all the monsters, another time I accidentally killed him after having killed all monsters. Very disappointing when it is practically the last thing I do in the whole game.
