Exactly, black sucks all of the detail out. I don’t know why so many people like it, unless they hate the car they’re driving.

Pretty much. The safety gear that’s going in our Rally Car project at the moment (Cage/Seats/Belts/Fire etc) is a multiple of what I paid for the car in the first place.

Sparco do actually make some like that. They are for road use- E marked, but not FIA approved. Should also be OK for autotest/solo IIRC.

If they’re a major brand coming from HK for a suspiciously low price, it’s a good give away. Obviously there are some low lifes selling these locally, so only get your belts or other safety equipment from a proper dealer.

The Escort is iconic in that there are many more of them currently still running rallies. Look at the entry sheets for any UK event and there will be at least several in there. It was a car available to every competitor, from the shed based clubman to the well financed. Less so today though.

They don’t show marks and scratches as much as a painted bumper, and are cheaper than a painted one to replace. All commercial vans tend to come with solid black bumpers, it’s only to top trim models that get painted ones.

I’ve had dealings with various Eastern European buyers on ebay- One car sale. They drove across the UK for a slightly scabby £200 2002 Suzuki Swift (Geo Metro!). Quick test drive, handed over the cash and away they went. Far less hassle than the usual ebay timewasters. It once took six auctions to actually get a legit
