My in-laws just lost their beloved dog and are in the same position. Get a rescue- 1-5 years old, already housebroken, and low energy for companionship. I go through waves of wondering if the work and expense are worth the effort, then I find neighborhood children in my driveway sitting and eating fresh tomatoes or picking blackberries and eating them off the vine and it makes me happy. I think any hobby that gets you outside and in the dirt is a good one.

Try containers close to the house. We plant the garden by our driveway and critters don’t come near the cars or in container planters on the deck.

Me too! I love flowers, shiny objects, and birds😁 I’ve spent our grocery bill on flowers and plants and fed the family veggies from the garden and eggs from our chickens for food but damn if our backyard doesn’t look fine! I prefer containers now because the chickens fuck up all of our flower beds looking for bugs.
