I agree with you 95% on the Dead Letters, because sometimes the needle on my internal bullshit meter cracks past the limiting mark and just straight up gives me anxiety. Could be all the glowing screens, or my own internal version of hope being proven childish at best. And I suppose that's my fault.

But pride in place and pride in a person, or manifesting pride through a person, seems very different. I am from Miami and I know what you mean, because people rag on it all the time and I get defensive about the place, not anyone associated with it.
