Back in high school, it was normal to pad out pointless, busy-work, required essays with long paragraphs of bullpucky and outright babbling - all to reach some desired word-count. The teacher didn’t have time to actually read every student’s essays all the way through so filling up pages with crap solved everything.

The point of the Electoral College was that the Founding Fathers believed that the common people were too uneducated and thus incapable of choosing a president. The College was a concession to those who, at the time, desired an American monarchy, rather than a republic. It was a compromise.
