It's one of the only ones I don't own. It seems to be the overlooked entry in the franchise.

Weird, it was usually the reverse back in the day, with the US versions of RPG's being easier.

How close to when it came out did you play it? I still think that's a huge part of the enjoyment. But, I do admit, most of my animosity for the game comes from it being overpraised when other games fall to the wayside.

Yeah, I'd definitely say it's mediocre. Not outright terrible perhaps, but not all that good. IV is a much better place to start really. As are VI, the DS version of III, and probably a couple others.
