Both of these things so much, unfortunately hardcore FFVII fans don't see that. Another problem that gets in the way of giving birth to more JRPG fans...

Yeah, that's basically what I'm trying to say here and people are taking it the wrong way. All I'm trying to say is that VII is a product of it's time and that's not the best way to get newcomers into a genre.

I kind of hate responding this way because I miss out on all of the other replies made to other people in the thread. Gawker seems to frown upon that anyway now.

Most of the FF's past VI are that way (One big cutscene), XIII was just more streamlined about it. Same game as VII but more fun. The exploration in particular in VII was absolutely mind numbing. Might as well cut it if you aren't going to it right, that's basically how I saw XIII. The parts of VII were Midgar, XIII

That's what I'm saying though, I'm not trolling at all. I just don't think a PS1 era 3D JRPG with all the problems that come along with it is the perfect game to show to someone as their first JRPG. You also have to deal with the load times and the like.

I agree actually, my favorite JRPG's remind me of a fun fantasy anime. Dragon Quest VIII is a great example of this.

The new one most definitely is, although the first two have a weird blend with the Adventure genre that prevents them from being in the JRPG genre completely. Labels are dumb anyway though.

But had you played a JRPG prior and when did you play FFVII? I think it's a terrible way to introduce the genre in this day and age...

I've been using a Chrome extension to do that.

I hope this stays top comment not that they care.

Think is what it does it doesn't do as well as others. I'd actually say that Dragon Quest IX or the DS version of Final Fantasy III are better at some of these things. I liked Crisis Core's materia system more than FFVII's and the characters really weren't anything special. Nowhere near as good as Chrono Trigger or

Sometimes random battles can be okay in moderation like in Pokemon, but yeah, they're super tedious. Dragon Quest IX is the first mainline Dragon Quest without them and I can say it should go in that prestigious group of RPG's.

Really? Seriously dude, you need to explain these things.

That's the joke...

Yes, I'll go play two games I don't own right now in order to know what your point is instead of I don't know, you explaining...

I've talked to some about them and it really annoyed me. He thinks I only like games like that (And 2D games in general) over modern 3D games because of nostalgia. But that's complete BS, I didn't even play Chrono until early this gen.

Yeah, I got it confused with a different game. Someone else already corrected me, which you'd probably know if this new comment system wasn't so bogus.

I found it the opposite of fluid, but I think it could be if it was remade. Pokemon is only complicated if one wants it to be. The basics are quite simple, which versions have you played? The newer games get to the point faster and aren't sluggish in the least.

I feel the same about FF Tactics Advance, I played that before I played any mainline FF's. The original Tactics is a bit difficult though so I'm not sure about making it one's first time. Plus, Strategy RPG is a slightly different sub-genre than JRPG.

Nah, Pokemon isn't really like TBS at all, but I can see it being in it's own genre in a way. However it's DNA is very closely aligned with Dragon Quest.
