Who can never be sure?
Sometimes. It has to sound natural, and sometimes that’s just how the talent talks. Sometimes we leave in umms too for effect. But sometimes we take them out if we don’t need them or it doesn’t feel right. And sometimes you’re in a mad dash to shave 10 seconds off a scene and you cut them for time.
Been with my wife since 2010 so probable not me :)
Um yeah it's probably around %50 or so, maybe less. It's easiest to just use the natural reaction shot, but it has to match the mood, and you scan through for any facial reactions or good looks and use them to punctuate stuff.
Sure! Generally, in order to become and editor, you need to first work as an Assistant Editor, which is a very technical position. You handle getting the footage on to the computers, syncing up all the cameras, that sort of thing. You really need to know the software very well (in TV it’s mostly Avid, but lots of…
Honestly, if I talk about shows I’ve actually worked on, I’d be violating NDAs and can get in big trouble. Sorry :(
My wife hates watching reality TV with me. I point out every faked edit and hum along to all the music cues I recognize from using them on different shows. Impossible not to notice once you know how the sausage is made.
It sounds glamorous, right? And it pays pretty well! But mostly my entire day is me sitting alone in a windowless room praying that my computer doesn’t crash before I get a chance to save the work I just did.
Right, I guess I should’ve been more clear on the jargon. Hope this helps!
Happy to put my knowledge to good use :)
I’m a reality TV editor by trade, and despite not caring about these people at all, I do enjoy my profession so maybe I can offer some insight (while procrastinating on the network notes I have to do for the show I’m working on). The cuts around 00:26, they chopped some stuff up but the only thing they really…
Cuba was the WORST part of that show. I can’t believe he was even nominated. Paulson, Vance, Brown, hell, even Travolta at times, I was able to believe they were the character they played. Every time I saw Cuba I was like, hey look, it’s the guy from Jerry Maguire pretending to be OJ. If the whole show wasn’t so damn…
I lol’d out loud at this
This year they had like 10 people in the booth, and there were long stretches that almost seemed Berman-free. I think ESPN feels like they can’t get rid of him altogether so they tried to minimize him some. And while the back-back-back-back chicken squawking was still there some, it did seem like an improvement over…
The Redskins winning the super bowl in ‘92. Was living in DC at the time and my parents hated the ‘skins but were big Art Monk fans (Syracuse alumni), so they cheered for them anyway. My elementary school held a big pep rally the friday before the game, and I enjoyed getting to go to the auditorium and make a ton of…
that’s the strong sense that I get from a couple of my friends who are in that exact situation, and I’ve been really trying to increase my tolerance because of that. I just feel this could be a naturally teachable moment for everybody.
Would it be more palatable if Sulu was a bisexual man in a monogamous relationship with another man, with a daughter he fathered in a one night stand with a woman? Wouldn’t portraying a bisexual in a committed relationship be pushing the envelope even more? My bisexual friends frequently lament the lack of…
I’ve been to a lot of Mets games that Harvey started, including game 5 of the world series last year. No Met fan I’ve ever talked to has a problem with Harvey. The tabloids want to knock him down a peg or something and drum up this crap, but it’s pretty transparent that it doesn’t represent the feelings of any actual…
29 here, for me it’s Clinton winning the first time, probably because we went as a family to the inauguration. It was cold and wet and my parents were very happy.
29 - I remember being mad that Saturday Night Live was pre-empted. I had recently brokered a deal with my parents that I could stay up to watch SNL on saturdays. That particular evening, I was robbed.
