Straw man, in another language?

Straw man? Who said anything about a conspiracy... you’re assuming a bunch of randos chatting on a blog are civil engineers. I’m not.

Let’s not mince words here... we’re talking about the result of a simple cost/benefit analysis. They can fix it. They don’t want to fix it.

I can’t believe the level of embittered nihilism I’m reading in these comments... as if everyone that has ever made a mistake deserved to die for it. The elaborate signs and the bar (protecting the inanimate bridge) mean fuck-all if people are still slamming in to the bridge on a regular basis. It’s a problem that

It’s actually a quote from a for-profit website that sells merchandise related to this whole situation... I don’t suppose they would have any interest in maintaining the status quo.

“road and civil engineers”

It is only a danger when drivers refuse to pay attention to the numerous warnings, signs, signals, and flashing lights. The fact that such people are granted driver’s licenses speaks to how much the system cares about keeping the roads safe.

The sewer main is a few feet under the street according to your own link... again... I expected there would need to be special consideration given to drainage and any existing structures (like a sewer main several feet below the surface) but I’m still left wondering why a drop of 6 inches would be impractical.

On a

There is a drain right there. There are dips and rises in roads all over the place (although they are usually gradual).... sidewalks are often much higher than the street level. A gradual decline and incline of 6 inches would not be dramatic, but it would probably be enough for most of the videos associated with that

Is it completely impractical to drop the street under the bridge like 6 inches? I mean... unless there is something critical immediately under the street right there it’s like a few days of work for a good construction team to clear and repave.

How much do you think it would cost to drop the street about 6 inches right at the bridge? More or less than all the billboards, signs, lights and ongoing repairs to the bridge?!

There is a lot of stupid here... including whoever keeps green-lighting fancy billboards, signs and lights as if they were an actual solution in this case.

My hand comes to rest in that position (stops moving) if I grasp my forearm in that way. I have seen many women grasp their forearms in that way. This “article” seems completely absurd.

This whole thing hinges on a weak semantic quibble.

I think you are being pedantic.

I was using it (resting) in the sense that I don’t need to maintain any conscious awareness of my hand for that shape to form simply from grasping my arms together in that way... the forefinger collapses (from the force of gripping the forearm) towards the thumb because of the curvature

Well... ignoring all the people commenting that it feels totally natural for them... and setting aside the fact that I just did it and my hand rests fairly naturally like that (although I had to move my hand up high enough so the forefinger can collapse, my forearm is much larger)... I have no doubt anyone could rest

My mom had skinny little arms and held her arms like that... I mean... I don’t imagine she held them exactly like that 24/7 but it would have probably taken a trivial amount of effort to snap a pic at the right moment.

I have bigger fore-arms and even I notice that my finger collapses down to form an “O” when I hold it

Maybe... but the resistance introduced by hooking it up to a dynamo would probably dramatically offset the propulsion. There may be a sweet spot where you get the most out of both systems but it seems more likely that it would produce a net loss overall by trying to do both at the same time in the same system.

The

This was my take... but Merriam-Webster defines niche (in this context) as simply any “specialized market”. It doesn’t actually have a “size” component. If you take that definition (from a fairly reputable source) then it would not be wrong to say the “juice-drinker niche” even though a huge portion of the population
