I thought his entire death sequence was bizarrely out of character for the show. Slow-motion mauling while screaming in agony followed by a really, really long take of the monsters eating him. It seemed overly... mean-spirited somehow?

Yeah that was bleak. And way more gruesome than I expected of the show, honestly.

Loved the episode but honestly I didn’t think it needed the last shot of Astin being feasted on. You just don’t do that with the good guys. It just ain’t right
