They banned it because someone did it 🙈
and in 15 years it’ll probably be the f22s and 35s that’ll be being bitched about.
A large part of that was also the incredible rate at which technology developed post WWII. Designs became obsolete much, much faster. That curve has flattened significantly while costs have skyrocketed.
I look back at the ridiculously short lifespan navy jets had, basically, prior to the Crusader and Phantom II. Cutlass, Demon, Tiger, Fury, Skyray, etc. Most of the early generations of Navy jet fighters had useful lifespans of around a decade.
As much as we loved Tomcats when they were airborne and protecting us, I still chuckle at the thought of sitting in my carrier group admiral’s daily brief and have CAGMO go on and on and on about how many Tomcats were broken and the new and exotic ways in which they were breaking.
Technically, the F-111 was forbidden from doing the ‘dump and burn’ also, according to US regs. That’s why you only see Aussie F-111s doing it.

They’re probably busy photoshopping some planes* onto a runway at this very moment, to be used on the front page of their main news paper to showcase how their air force is ready to destroy the capitalist powers...or something.
There is definitely a lethal as hell look to the F16 that’s only increased by its mechanical elegance.
Despite their age, F-16's still look the part. Lethal.
Having Foal Eagle/Team Spirit flashback to my year at the Kun, now. I was shivering in a bunker on the edge of the flight line sucking through a gas mask rather than working on planes. No sleep for three or four days remains the same, though.
