Bums me out that we still think this way: that it would be crazy for a guy to cheat on a supermodel, which implies what? That less attractive women should expect to be cheated on?
Is this a joke? This is such a cliché article. The same article that is written anytime a famously beautiful woman is cheated on. People assume someone’s level of physical attractiveness should make their partners incapable of cheating on them. What does that say about less attractive people? Of course, she was…
Came here to say this! Strident?? Anne Elliot? This word salad makes me think that the reviewer has never even read a summary of the novel. Talk about failing to make a case.
Vibrant, OK, Austen’s writing is always vibrant. But “jocular” gives entirely the wrong idea. Persuasion is witty, but it’s a more heavy-hearted affair than usual. That doesn’t necessarily preclude the Fleabag approach, but if one were to do that then there’d have to be the appropriate tone, and not “ohh goodness me…
“The vibrant, jocular tone of the book?” Persuasion is easily Austen’s most thoughtful, even downbeat novel. There are some elements of humor, but treating it like a breezy Regency lark is exactly the wrong approach, and it’s why pretty much everywhere else hates this movie.
I mean this without any snark... it sounds like being famous absolutely sucks.
Why do so many of you dumb assholes just feel the need to take the shittiest and snarkiest possible take on every single thing that happens
Writing is a very therapeutic thing for anyone who experienced something traumatic. Even if her book becomes a NY Times Bestseller, the pay is still pretty crap, especially compared to writing for film or TV. She’s not going to live off of book money, she’s still acting, never stopped. The idea that having a voice in…
It’s a book about her own experiences. I don’t know why it’s gross that she included a part of her experience that was obviously very traumatic. I think unfortunately we just live in a society where the only way people seem to be able to normalize mental health, addiction, queerdom, etc. is by selling it. That’s not…
Peak Hiddleston was completely nuts. And then poof, it was over.
My friend and I were on a road trip this weekend, saw a billboard ad for it and just couldn’t stop referring to it until we got back.
Completely expecting to read the word ‘Boardway’ a lot.
Poor woman was put in an impossible situation. Everyone knew she was miscast and it was true. She was terrible. She may be leaving “early” but not early enough. February would have been ideal.
“Once the production decided to take the show in a different direction”
A direction where they wanted the lead actress to be able to sing good.
I agree, though one of the things I love about Persuasion the novel is how much Anne gets to come back from not speaking up for herself or getting what she wants, and it seems like this version of Anne isn’t really that same character.
or you could just write original stuff with anarchic comic energy if that’s what you want to do
Not at all. Persuasion is a concise, engaging read with a very likable protagonist. Sense and Sensibility and Emma, on the other hand, were both too tedious for me to finish, and I powered through all of Mansfield Park, in which the heroine pines after her cousin until he gives in and marries her.
The world does not deserve a creature as magnificent as Mr. Happy Face.
No one gives a flying fuck what you think.
