Couldn't quite tell from your post, but you may not be aware that all of the 'Shadow' series was written after the Ender cycle ending with Children of the Mind. They're just told in parallel. But the "weirder" Ender cycle books were written before the Bean-focused books.

In all seriousness, I think a lot of people start learning as gamers, picking up any number of video soccer games. As for whom YOU should root for, I would say that if you have no reason to pick any league or team, even the most tenuous one, just take it all in and see where the journey leads you.
