I’d venture that margin is built because of a variety of things and never expiring stock. If you have expiring stock, that’s a waste of resources and poor inventory management. Other reasons for higher margin is:

I’m not focusing on the retailer. Margins on those are known garbage but that’s what distributors work with. They don’t make the product and deal with cost swings like manufacturers do. Producers/manufacturers have lofty targets to not only cover their asses but ensure development.
