I don’t know what its like now, but the process for “free lunch” students back in the day required quite a bit of paperwork and it was painfully obvious when you got your lunch, that you were “freebie”.  I sincerely hope its better now, but I have a feeling its still pretty awful.

Thirty years ago, schools began to “outsource” lunch programs to big companies like ARA, who also btw, are one the largest detention / prison commissary companies as well. It’s big business and they run on profit. The quality went down and collecting past due balances became aggressive.

My mom used to say that it was a stingy ass mom who didn’t leave dough in the bowl or on the spoon for the kids to eat or lick. And we ALL SURVIVED CHILDHOOD CDC!!

I am going to have to seek this out as well.  I love a good Gose and this sounds perfect for a winter’s eve while wrapping presents.

Every year our house (well, my sister and I) go on a two day baking blitz and then I bring in a few platters of cookies to work. Thumbprint cookies are always a hit and one of my co-workers loves them so much, I usually put aside 4 or 5 for her alone. I usually go overboard on the jam making in the summer, so its a

Back when I DJed in the 1980s, Homosapiens was a heavy rotation disc—it had enough edge to get the alt-rock folks going and danceable for everyone else.

Every year my sister and I make stollen for our families. Yes, its a full day commitment but it wouldn’t taste like Christmas without a loaf around the house to have with butter and coffee. Plus its one of those things that connect me back to my Nana and Mom and all those years of holiday baking of the loaves and all

If they don’t open the first episode with Trump vs Mueller, I’ll be quite disappointed.

Thank you for the nod to Circe. It was one of those books that I kept bugging my friends incessantly to read this year.  I loaned my copy to my daughter in Boston and I have this feeling I’m not getting it back and need to go out and buy another copy.   It was one of those books I polished off on a Saturday afternoon

This happens every time there is a national day of mourning.  All federal agencies close.  It’s become a dark joke at the post office where my husband works when a former president gets deathly ill about whether they get an extra paid holiday.

I made it about half way through the article and honestly, my eyes misted over too much to continue. My mom was a cook and listening to Anthony talk about food etc reminds me of her and all the people I knew and loved who worked in that industry. I’ve lost so many of them over the past two decades, that honestly, I

As a fellow vegetarian, this is one of the most balanced responses I have ever read. Thank you. I remember reading about Tibetan Buddhists and how despite many Buddhists being vegetarian, they aren’t. Because honestly, they’d starve—but they do try to eat ethically.

When we were short on cash and needed a quick meal, we used to eat Domino’s Pizza until they went completely pro-life and that stopped quickly.   I feel the same about Chick-A-Fil as well.

then you need to try the other grape-y tasting kosher wine--the infamous Mogen David.  Mad Dog 2020 was a favorite of cash strapped college students before the age of Two buck chuck.

an industry that Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione once famously called “99-percent asshole-free.”

Even by her own son’s admission, my mother in law was not a great cook.  But she had one slow cooker recipe that was amazing and included Kielbasa, garbanzo beans, tomato sauce and onions/garlic.  I’ve made it for pot lucks at work and I’ve always brought home an empty dish.   The best Kielbasa I’ve eaten was from a

It tastes like if Welch’s made a hard grape juice

My sister was working for Sears Catalog pickup when these monstrosities were all the rage. It was a wonderful season of people blaming employees right and left for ruining THEIR CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS!!

There used to be a restaurant in the Haight district of San Francisco called “All You Knead” that had a sandwich that I used to joke with my husband I would ask for as a death row, last meal. It was called the the TLT and it was a BLT made with tempeh bacon that was amazing. Their menu was pretty extensive but every
