I know many, many Catholics who pretty much only go to Mass on Ash Wednesday, Easter and Christmas. As you’ve said, Ash Wednesday isn’t even a Holy Day of obligation, so I’ve (perhaps cynically) always seen as people wanting to feel special. I’m agnostic now, but I still find it kind of gross.
