I think the “most languages are gendered” statement here is a bit Eurocentric here. You head east to Asia and you tend to get classifier mechanics instead around nouns, in North American languages you often get animate/inanimate gender instead, and a lot of subsaharan Africa you get large numbers of noun classes…
