This. If we’re trying to rehabilitate him, returning him to the same environment and subculture that influenced him to commit the crime probably isn’t a great way to do that.

See, while I agree with you on the rehabilitation angle, seeing as he used football and the related prestige to try to dodge justice the first time around, I think keeping him off the team may very well keep women safer. I agree with the writer upthread that he deserves a second chance at an education, but hasn’t…
I think the part that rankles here is that he used football and his status in the initial case to try to squirm free of consequences. When it’s clearly part of the weapons he used against the girl and her advocates, I think it’s not just the privilege to move on we’re talking about.

It becomes use it or lose it. Launch your missiles or someone will blow up your silos before you can.
It wouldn’t be good, but you’re overblowing it. Nuclear winter’s probably not as big of an issue as we thought it was (see Sagan’s predictions about the burning oilfields during the Gulf War, for instance), and the end of all life? Really? Those big worms in the ocean vents gotta fear the bomb? We lose one or two…
I think that’s advice for surviving the initial blast, not the fallout afterwards. This article assumes you made it past that first part.
Was it Stalin that said that quantity has a quality all its own?
I didn’t know they made a lemon cake one. That sounds dynamite
For me it’s the birthday cake flavor that does it.
I think it’s what you’re used to in terms of sugar. Those of us on restricted diets, I’ve been eating that way for so long that actual sugars taste weird to me, and aspartame and stevia taste “normal”. If I get served the non-diet pop by mistake, my first reaction on drinking is “what the hell is this?”
Same thing…
Yeah, I don’t know how this isn’t the first thing everyone thinks of
Not to mention metalhead chicks and the like who are in a totally different subculture world.
Just imagining this jury totally full of goths.
Underrated post
Choosing a different industry at 43 is a nontrivial task. Age discrimination may not be legal, but every entry-level employer does it.
This comes off weird to me because “Holy Land” is shorthand for the best Middle Eastern food spot in Minneapolis. I feel like I would show up expecting the dankest hummus and be deeply disappointed.
Where are you getting that statistic? For a long time the Asian groups fleeing communism in SE Asia were pretty damn conservative.
I’m deeply hesitant to give atheistic assholes of the Maher/Dawkins variety a pass, and I think the argument that religion is the root of our problems kinda does that.
I mean, Muslims in the US are younger than the population in general as a demographic, and mostly urban, so this shouldn’t be too shocking.
I find myself wondering how many people thought that way while voting for Trump; a political Samson Option, bringing the proverbial temple down around us.
