This is exactly what jumped out at me – her son has never dated as an adult, he apparently has no examples of healthy familial relationships for context, and he sounds like he was desperate for any kind of love. Poor kid :(

It also reminds me of my own pretty loud/unusual laugh, which I totally used to be embarrassed about (because as we know, women are supposed to giggle, not guffaw).
