People didn’t smile in painted portraits either because it was considered a serious occasion so it warranted a serious expression. You wanted to look dignified for the portrait that you were supposed to keep forever. That idea moved into photography when it was implemented-it just happened to work with the limitations…

I think they didn’t smile because they had to hold the pose for a while to get the shot, and no particular expression lessened the likelihood of a blurred photo.
